  Online Educational Project Models

Various online models are possible to disseminate educational resource materials, and source information using the Internet and World Wide Web, including:
1. Online discussion list also referred to as a "Listserv" or "mailing list".
2. Web site consisting of linked Web pages.
3. Web site consisting of one or more searchable databases.
4. Hybrid consisting of some or all of the above.

Below, the first three models are outlined, and, by clicking on the icon or title, a chart of functionalities and tasks is provided.

Online Discussion List

This model involves interested parties forwarding a message to a central email server to initially subscribe to the discussion list. Once subscribed, any messages posted to the list are sent as email messages to all list members. An example of this type of site is WWWEDU (http://edweb.bilkent.edu.tr/wwwedu.faq.htm), a list for the discussion of the role of the WEB in education.

Web Site with Linked Pages

This model consists of a collection of linked Web pages which reside on one server. Subject categories and sub-categories are assigned for specific disciplines, using a menu and su-menu approach. Navigation of the site is done by selecting main categories and sub-categories for greater specificity. The site could also include a search engine to allow users to search for resources on the site by entering keywords.

In this model, the Web pages could all be created by one person, or by individual subject experts. If pages are created by different people, it is preferable to have a template into which information can be entered. This would contribute to greater consistency in the site's appearance and content.

Web Site with Searchable Database

This model consists of a database containing records for each resource, and a Web interface which is searchable with a local search engine. The search results are displayed on a Web page. If the results are descriptions of Web sites, the database can include a live link to the retrieved resource site itself.
